One of the greatest gaming stories never told -2 minutes read

We’ve all heard the stories where talented young gamers go pro and crush the world scene of Esports, or turn into streamers that make ridiculous amounts of money. But there is another way.

My childhood friend, Andrew, went from rags to riches by playing World of Warcraft. But not in the way you are thinking.

As a kid, I was fortunate enough to be one of the first of my friends to get a gaming PC and to also receive World of Warcraft (which had just launched). Andrew could not afford either of them. So we made a deal – every day after school while I was doing homework (yes I was a good boy) he could play on my account and level-up my character (yes he hated school). As such, on one magical day, I gave him my password.

Very soon he met a guy online and started playing together. They became friends. After a while the guy said “Would you like to leve-up my account instead while I am at work? I will pay you”. Instantly he ditched me and went for the money (I would have done the same). They became closer friends.

Six months later the guys says “I need someone to take care of the house, dog & run my errands while I am on holiday. Would you like to come over?”. Andrew said yes. He found himself being picked up by a Lamborghini and living in a mansion in London with private pool, cinema and gym – the guy was very, very rich. They became even closer friends.

Six months later the guys says “I am starting a new company. Would you like to come and work for me?”. Andrew said yes, and the rest is history. He worked hard, got promoted several times, switched jobs and is now working in one of the largest tech companies in the world making over $100,000 a year by the age of 27.

The bastard didn’t buy me a coffee to this day. (I hope you are reading this, Andrew).

Moral of the story: it all started with a World of Warcraft password. If one guy can build his dreams just with that then you can do it too by playing guitar, skiing, chicken wrestling or anything else that you are passionate about. Opportunity is there, just open your eyes to see it.
